I created the first Bonnet in 1972,
it was a
wonderful mix of ideas and materials—I was at the end of several
years of doing “dress-up” and performance, and was looking
to create art that would exist in space—sculpture. I had been collecting
antique hats. They were piled on my work-table along with my recent experiments
in life-casting. I was applying make-up to a rubber casting of my own
face—it seemed logical to put the face inside one of the hats. I
covered it with black veiling and was thrilled with the image.
Bonnet #1 was the start of about 6 years of working figuratively—I
created numerous figures and tableaux until 1978 when I did Miss Havisham.
